From time to time we hear on TV or read in newspapers that there has been a misunderstanding between two countries caused by language problems. Recently there has been a similar issue in Poland triggered by a bad word used by a translator. When we hear such news we begin to wonder: were the international relations between two countries easier if people speak the same language?
In my opinion the answer is yes. Speaking one language would solve the problem of translation. We have to remember that a discussion between two people, for example prime ministers, looks different with and without a translator. The latter situation is more private - people tend to be less official and for example tell a joke. On the contrary, conversation with a translator focuses usually on important matters, leaving no time for a word in private.
One language spoken worldwide would also eliminate the problems of translators mistakes which lead to misunderstandings. What also counts is making a world truly global, with no language barriers, this would help to improve international relations of countries with unpopular languages, and therefore improve the economic situations of such countries.
Of course such situation would have also minuses. Countries would lose a very important element of national identity - the language. Apart form problems with culture, what will a prime minister of a visiting country see if everything would be the same as in his home country?
Generally speaking, I think that one language spoken around the world would improve the international relations and hurt culture, but I think it is worth doing it.
